Child poverty
By Ivette Zazurca
Poverty according to the dictionary means: “the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor.” Children are the ones who suffer the most due to this poor condition. Children experience poverty as an environment that damage their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual development. By discriminating against their participation in society and undervalue their potential, poverty not only causes suffering for boys and girls, it also deprives them of power.
The image shows a dirty room where a little girl is sleeping. On the left there is a pile of clothes that surely will be broken with holes and dirty probably because they don’t have potable water in their home. Next to this pile of clothes there is an open door. At the top, there are a lot of things as two balls, more clothes, a white plastic basket and garbage such as plastic glasses which should be used to drink. In the centre of the image there is a mattress without sheets and blankets. It seems that on that mattress will sleep the whole family. On the mattress there is a little girl wearing an ugly, small, checked, cotton with braces dress; and she is also wearing a plastic bracelet. The girl is lie back on the mattress with her head on a pillow sleeping. The girl is maybe living in a city with her family and I think that the city it could be in South-America such as in Nicaragua. I am sure that this girl does not go to school and is malnourished because her family does not have enough money to afford the basic needs, she will not have a very long life since she will die from hunger or from some disease, as well as not having access to health care. Despite being a little girl, therefore being innocent, she must realize what is happening around her; so I think that she is sad because she should not understand why there are other children who have everything they need to live and she does not. She, like all children, must dream that when she grows up she could be a doctor, teacher, actress ... But unfortunately because of her family situation it will be very difficult for her to achieve it. This image is a reflection of how children live on the front line and suffer poverty, we can see how this girl has a scarcity of all the first needs to survive and have a decent life.
Poverty is something that unfortunately exists today. I think that measures should be taken to try to end it and above all to help the most vulnerable group, children. I think that all children should have access to education, health, food and a roof to live on. Not only because they are children, but also because they are people so all of us have the right to have human rights. There is a phrase in a song that I really like that says: “That there is no person who should not have, since we are circumstances we never choose to be” for me this phrase means that we should all have the same opportunities since we are not to blame or choose where we are born. I think that we should value more what we have, because there is a lot of people that would give anything to have it.
