The little things

By Àngela Castelló

Constantly thinking about survive and afford the basic needs to have a deserving life. Knowing you don’t have nothing given at all that you have to look for it. Having the anguish that maybe today yes but probably tomorrow you will not have or find the enough resources. The simple and obvious having water could be, for many people is the biggest challenge to find some. What I find sadder is the fact that it affects many young children who still have their whole lives ahead of them and cannot take advantage of it properly.

This is what represents this picture makes me realise how important are the little things like can be having water and that if people that have everything and even more than they need give their part, we could decrease this unhappiness. From the background to the front on the right there’s a poor stream full of rubbish and mud from the ground, so the water is not potable. In the foreground, on the left, we can see a little kid that may have less than five years old holding a plastic bottle half full. He must taking this dirty water as he doesn’t have any more option for reduce his thirsty. It also shocks me a lot the state of his shoes and clothes, they are all filthy and a bit torn, it may be second-hand clothing. While other people, and I’m including myself too, throw their clothes and shoes when they are broken, others like this child are begging and searching for it without caring at all the state of those. His look express anger, confusion and sadness; he seems to be worried. He might be alone that he have to care about all his necessities with not help. I can’t really feel but just imagine, being such youngster, all the pain and horror he may be going through, and it saddens me thinking he can't enjoy all his childhood like he deserve and having to live under the word "survive", not being enough happier and to settling for the little he have. This is what the kid in this photo is suffering.

I feel ashamed to live in a society that allows this situation. It distresses me that in the world we live in and with all the resources at hand we have nowadays, not enough is done to combat it. Poverty is a really huge and increasing deathly problem which is every day current in our society and we are not really conscious of that. Also we have to be more grateful for the life we all have and appreciate the little thing that may seem insignificant. Everyone has the right to be happy and get the basic needs.
